Varys, nicknamed “The Spider” is the most mysterious figure in Game of Thrones. His story, which is always in the shadows of power in Westeros, makes him the most influential and most mysterious character in the book A Song of Ice and Fire and the TV series Game of Thrones.
Because of his figure and actions, many fans are wondering what Varys’ goals and ambitions really are. As someone who often plays on both feet, Varys’ goals and ambitions are very difficult to predict. So fans created many theories trying to explain who and what Varys’ big goal was.
- Varys is a loyal Targaryen supporter
Last weekend (27/10) Thrones ID created a thread (thread) about Varys’ goals and ambitions. In the thread it is stated that in the TV series Game of Thrones, Varys’ goal is very clear, namely “Targaryen Restoration.” His actions during several seasons of Game of Thrones were clearly aimed at preparing Viserys and Daenerys as rulers of Westeros.
Even though Varys was pardoned by King Robert Baratheon and became one of the king’s advisors, Varys secretly thought that Robert Baratheon was not the ideal king for Westeros. Therefore, Varys planned a conspiracy with his friend Illyrio Mopatis to restore the glory of the Targaryens as rulers of Westeros for centuries.
In several of his actions, Varys prevented the conflict between Stark-Lannister in Season 1 so that Khal Drogo first had Daenerys’ child and wanted to cross the Narrow Sea, and then attack Westeros.
Varys also influenced King Joffrey to fire Ser Barristan Selmy on charges of failing to protect King Robert, which was actually aimed at getting Ser Barristan to support Daenerys.
Varys is also the one who rescues Tyrion and brings him to Meereen to support Daenerys.
- Varys is of Targaryen descent
By looking at the clear evidence of Varys’ loyalty to Targaryen, is it possible that Varys is a descendant of Targaryen? Could it be that this loyalty does not come for free, but is a consequence of Varys’ blood relationship?
Since being recruited by King Aerys II, Varys has been a loyal supporter of the “Mad King”. When Prince Rhaegar (Daenerys and Viserys’ older brother… Jon Snow’s father) held a big fighting event in Westeros or the Tourney at Harrenhaal, Varys warned the Mad King that Rhaegar was conspiring to overthrow the king.
Varys also warned the Mad King not to open the gates of King’s Landing to Tywin Lannister’s troops, which turned out to be proven later that the Lannister troops were causing chaos in King’s Landing or what was known as “the Sack of King’s Landing.”
Is Varys actually related to King Aerys II?
Was Varys actually a Targaryen so he shaved his head bald so he wouldn’t be discovered as having silver hair like a Targaryen?
- Varys Has Royal Blood
It is said that when Varys was still a slave in Essos, Varys was bought at a high price by a wizard from Myr. Varys was then used as a ritual material by the wizard. His blood was taken, his body parts were burned, and his genitals were mutilated. It was during this ritual that Varys reportedly heard a sound from the fire that would forever change his life.
Why would an orphaned slave like Varys be bought at such a high price by a wizard? Wouldn’t a wizard like Melissandre only be able to use the blood of royal descendants to perform magic rituals?
Does Varys secretly have the blood of a king, so that the wizard from Myr knows about it?
- Varys is a Blackfyre
This theory comes from a reference to the book A Song of Ice and Fire. Not from the TV Series Game of Thrones.
Varys was not a Targaryen supporter, but a supporter or even descendant of House Blackfyre.
House Blackfyre is a clan founded by bastards (illegitimate children) of Targaryen descent. This house was first founded by Daemon Blackfyre I – the illegitimate son of King Aegon IV Targaryen. Daemon led several rebellions against the Targaryen rulers, until he was exiled to Essos.
Varys in the ASOIAF book, openly supports “The Young Griff” who he calls Prince Rhaegar’s baby son whom he rescued from the Sack of King’s Landing. However, many people doubt this statement and suspect that The Young Griff is actually a descendant of House Blackfyre.
So why do Varys and Mopatis protect Viserys and Daenerys? The real goal is to destabilize Westeros – to make them war against each other – so that House Blackfyre takes advantage of the war.
- Varys is a Merman (Merman)
Whaaaat
Is it true that Varys was a mermaid? OK, this theory is a bit strange. But let’s first read the reasons and arguments below.
In the world of Song of Ice and Fire, there are fantasy creatures such as dragons, giant humans, zombies, white-walkers, children of the forest, and so on. Among these fantasy creatures, many also come from the ocean. The ancestors of House Greyjoy, for example, admitted that they often encountered giant octopuses in the ocean. There are also merpeople (merlings) that people on Iron Island believe in – they are even believed to be one of the gods of the sea.
Then why is Varys called a descendant of a mermaid?
In the ASOIAF book, when Arya was practicing chasing cats in the Red Keep, one part of the Palace, she heard two people secretly discussing the Lannister-Stark conflict and efforts to bring back the Targaryens. The two people are Varys and Mopatis.
Strangely, when Arya checked where the two people had come from, they came from a dead-end room where there was only a well and a drain. Where did Varys and Mopatis come from? Could it be that the two of them emerged from the water like a mermaid?
Another story involves a conversation between Tyrion and Varys. Tyrion jokes that if Varys lies then he will order the troops to throw Varys into the sea.
Do you know what Varys’ answer was?
“I am not afraid. In fact, maybe you will be surprised when that happens…”
Which theory about Varys is the most believable?
