This review contains spoilers for Season 7. For those who haven’t watched it, you have been warned.
Sometimes, we have to keep our expectations in check for Game of Thrones. This episode wasn’t as amazing as the previous episode. There are a few holes here and there, but it can’t be called a bad episode. Let’s review one by one.
Cersei’s pregnancy
Jaime is rescued by Bronn and returns to King’s Landing. Jaime then meets Cersei and tells her how horror it was fighting against the Dothraki and a dragon.
Jaime said that fighting for the Dothraki was like sport. Plus, a dragon has left the Lannister troops in disarray, while Daenerys still has 2 dragons. If Daenerys released all three, then Daenerys would be unstoppable.
But Cersei doesn’t seem to care. Whatever stands in our way, Cersei says, we will defeat. Even if they surrender later, Daenerys is unlikely to forgive them. Cersei already knows the choice before her, life and death. And Cersei is ready for it.
In the next scene, after Jaime tells about his meeting with Tyrion, Cersei reveals that she is pregnant. Jaime didn’t expect it until his eyes filled with tears. Cersei then said, “don’t betray me again.”
Many fans speculate that Cersei may be lying to manipulate Jaime. This speculation is very reasonable.
Jaime is a person who dares to follow his own heart. Jaime dares to say “no” to something he thinks is wrong. Or saying “yes” to whatever he thinks is right – even if everyone thinks otherwise. Jaime killed the Mad King, did incest with his biological sister, turned down the position lordship at Casterly Rock, freeing Tyrion, etc. because he thinks he is right.
Cersei knows Jaime’s weakness. The only reason Jaime could ignore his conscience was his love for Cersei. When Jaime had just faced the “horror” of fighting against the Dothraki and Dragons, so that Jaime felt that the war against Daenerys could not be won, Cersei needed another tool to keep Jaime willing to fight for her. By finding out that Cersei is pregnant, Cersei hopes that Jaime will no longer hesitate to fight against Daenerys.
Or could Cersei really be pregnant?
When Jaime entered Cersei’s room, Qyburn was there. Qyburn says to Cersei, “I can give you something.” Although Cersei politely rejected the offer. Here, it is possible that Qyburn offered medicine to provide comfort to the pregnant Cersei.
But isn’t it, in the prophecy of Maggie The Frog (or what many know as Valonqar theory) states that Cersei only had 3 children?
Of course, Cersei being pregnant doesn’t mean she will survive to give birth. It is possible that this pregnancy information, if true, is a signal that Cersei will die soon, before her child is born.
(This Sunday night at 7 pm WIB, as usual @Thrones_ID will create a #ThronesTheory specifically discussing Cersei’s death or Valonqar Theory).
Love Blooms at Dragonstone
Previously, I admitted that “Love Blooms at Dragonstone” was originally just a joke to spice things up hype Jon Snow meets Daenerys for the first time. Many people also use the hashtag #jonaerys because they want the two of them to get married – then both sit on the Iron Throne.
OK, this time we’re talking seriously.
I can say that Jon Snow and Daenerys are increasingly finding a point of trust in each other. Daenerys believes in what Jon Snow has always stood for, no longer always asking Jon Snow to kneel.
The scene where Jon Snow comes face to face with Drogon, Daenerys looks confused because for the first time her Drogon is so tame to someone other than herself. After that, we see Daenerys being very warm towards Jon Snow, much warmer than when they first met.
Drogon being tame to Jon Snow is like when our pet dog or cat gets along with a potential boyfriend, which makes us more confident in that person. Just like if our family likes our potential boyfriend, the greater our chances of having a relationship with that person.
Interesting journey ahead, especially if Daenerys learns of the fact that Jon Snow has a bigger claim to the Iron Thrones than she does. Will Daenerys accept it?
Jon Snow Is Not a Targaryen Bastard
After it was confirmed in Season 6 that Jon Snow was the child of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark’s relationship, many fans then wondered about the status of Rhaegar and Lyanna’s relationship.
Was Lyanna really raped by Rhaegar, as is the common understanding in Westeros? Or did Rhaegar make Lyanna his second wife after Elia? Although the Targaryens have not practiced polygamy for a long time, the practice of polygamy has traditions and historical precedents in the Targaryen Dynasty.
This question is later answered in Episode 5, accidentally by… Gilly.
(This is like an unfunny joke from D&D. Bringing up super important information from insignificant storylines and characters)
When Gilly was reading the book, she came across a sentence that High Septon Maynard issued “annulment” (annulment of marriage – a kind of divorce) to Prince Rhaegar Targaryen and re-marriage at the same time to someone else in the realm of Dorne.
This means, Jon Snow is a legitimate child – no bastard – from Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. And therefore has a greater claim than Daenerys to reign on the Iron Throne.
Although, there are also those who think that it is based on “Right of Conquest” The Targaryens no longer have the right to the Iron Throne, because they were defeated by Robert Baratheon in Robert’s Rebellion. So, the one who has the right to occupy the Iron Throne is a descendant of Baratheon, namely Gendry.
Who knows. Regulating who has the right to sit on the Iron Throne is as difficult as managing the traffic jam at the Mampang intersection on Monday morning.
“Chaos is Ladder” in Winterfell
Then we arrive at Winterfell, where the northern lords was complaining to the Lady of Winterfell, because she couldn’t find the King in the North at Winterfell. Lord Glover feels that Sansa should be Queen in the North. Yohn Royce says the Knights of the Vale came and fought for Sansa.
In a way we are witnessing the struggle and dissatisfaction of Jon Snow.
Arya, who had arrived at Winterfell, observed this situation. Arya observed Sansa who seemed calm. Arya also secretly observes Littlefinger, who appears to be conspiring with Lord Glover and Yohn Royce.
Arya also sees Maester Wolkan giving something important to Littlefinger – something that seems capable of unmasking the conspiracy Littlefinger is planning.
Arya goes into Littlefinger’s room and finds a scroll containing Sansa’s letter to Robb Stark:
“Robb, I write to you with a heavy heart. Our good king Robert is dead, killed from wounds he took in a boar hunt. Father has been charged with treason. He conspired with Robert’s brothers against my beloved Joffrey and tried to steal his throne. The Lannisters are treating me very well and provide me with every comfort. I beg you: come to King’s Landing, swear fealty to King Joffrey and prevent any strife between the great houses of Lannister and Stark.”
If you remember, this is a letter that Sansa sent to Robb at the end of Season 1, which was written because of Cersei’s threats. Because of this letter, it was the first time Robb called Northern Bannermen to fight against the Lannisters.
When Arya comes out of the room we see that Littlefinger deliberately let Arya find the scroll. Arya falls into a trap. So what is Littlefinger’s plan here?
Previously, Littlefinger tried to win over Sansa and Bran through the good relationship between himself and the Stark family. Arya’s presence made Littlefinger’s strategy change.
As we already know, Littlefinger’s strategy is to create conflict so that he can gain personal advantage from the conflict (Chaos is a Ladder). The conflict he is currently building is between Sansa and Arya. The scroll of the letter will make Arya even more distrustful of Sansa, because she doesn’t know the fact that Sansa was forced by Cersei to write the letter.
To be honest, it is still difficult to know what kind of plans and benefits Littlefinger will get from Sansa and Arya’s conflict. What is clear is that if the Stark family is not solid and is in conflict with each other, it will be easier for outsiders like Littlefinger to manipulate each other, just as Littlefinger pitted the Starks against the Lannisters.
Or could it be that Arya is already two steps ahead of Littlefinger?
We believe Littlefinger’s journey will end at Winterfell. And maybe this event is what started it. Arya and Sansa conflict, but then Bran perhaps explains the truth, which then leads to Sansa and Arya working together to kill Littlefinger in secret.
On the other hand, I personally feel happy that Littlefinger is back in the game. One of the things I like most about Game of Thrones is the political intrigue or “Game of Shadows” that Littlefinger, Varys, and Tyrion often play against each other. In Season 7 unfortunately this is very minimal, because it is focused on war and battle scenes.
I’m glad Littlefinger is back playing political intrigue on North (although hoping it doesn’t work out this time), rather than just watching Littlefinger lick Sansa’s feet in the hope of one day being given power.
Episode 6 Predictions
After being exposed to many spoilers from episode 6, I decided not to write predictions for episode 6 like before.
*To the leaker of episode 6, fuck you!
